Pre-School Nursery Provision

In the early 1970s, Rugby Mencap established a pre-school playgroup ‘The Opportunity Group’ behind Richmond Lodge for children under five with learning disabilities, many of whom were excluded from mainstream nursery provision.

In the years that followed, a range of proposals were developed to expand and sustain the service, reflecting a continued commitment to supporting local families. The playgroup remained a valued part of Richmond Lodge’s provision until its closure in 1999.

Gateway House Opening

In 1972, Warwickshire County Council purchased a vicarage on Bilton Road, which was later leased to Rugby Mencap to accommodate up to ten residents.  Parent (and later Chairman), Peter Scott recalled that the top floor was converted into a flat for the House Manager, Hazel Jenkins.

The property was renamed Gateway House and officially opened in 1977 by MP Bill Price, making Rugby Mencap the first group in the country to pioneer the idea of offering both long-term and short-term stay to individials with learning disabilities.

In the late 1980s, Gateway House was offered free of charge (subject to a covenant) to Rugby Mencap. The residential accommodation was later expanded and refurbished after it was decided that a live-in manager was no longer required.

Hazel Jenkins retired in 1986 but went on to volunteer at the Gateway Club when it was held at Richmond Lodge, and was a loyal supporter of the charity until her passing in 2013.
